III & Long Foundation
Santonio Holmes established The III & Long Foundation, A Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation in March of 2009. III & Long is in honor of his son, Santonio III, who suffers from Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Holmes understands the difficulties that face families that have been affected by the disease. “As a parent of someone who has been diagnosed with SCD, I know how expensive the hospital bills and the medication can be. My goal is to help families that cannot afford the medication by giving grants to charities that assist those particular individuals.”
This mission of III & Long Foundation is to help in the research and finding a cure for Sickle Cell Disease along with assisting families that have been affected by SCD
SCD affects the red blood cells in the body to where they become sickle-shaped or crescent shaped instead of round, and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels. Medical conditions resulting from SCD include lung tissue damage, pain episodes in the arms, legs, chest and abdomen and strokes. Organs such as the liver, kidneys, and spleen can also be affected. Damage to the spleen, especially in children make them easily vulnerable to bacterial infections. In August 2010, Santonio III, at the age of 8, had his spleen removed.
